Houston's Mayor , Anise Parker opines that perhaps the oldest Golf Course in town ( 105 years old ) , would better serve the City as a Botanical Garden . PDUS objects , ( even President Erkel would ) .
We suspect our heavyset Mayor would need a Golf cart to tour the acreage , ( fitness and fatness being mutually exclusive ) . Several years back we organized to stop her enormity from awarding that GC land to the local Soccer team , for 10 practice fields . She must hate Golf . At the time we pursued a 501-3c as well as a Historic designation to protect our Texas jewel . This was asserted to be unnecessary , as the Park's Department would ' protect ' the asset . They must have changed priorities . Perhaps generous Campaign donations were made to ' The Party ' .
You will recall our bitching as libraries were closed to buy an $18 Million Dollar Soccer Stadium for the Dynamo , when Houston already had an overabundance of unused Stadia , including the Astrodome ( which we still assert , should be converted into the World's largest Casino ) . That would be wildly popular here and not a patronage payoff like the soccer stadium was for our Latino population . Garden admirers we presume would not spend locally like them , or like Gamblers ( USFL , Astrodome , and otherwise ) , and no better than Grrl's Basketball did w the long gone Comets of the WNBA . ( They were themselves patronage for our lesbian community who it seemed were 50% of their fan base ) . Their rabid devotion did not make the stadium family friendly at all , but changed it into a meet market for Grrls only .
The Gus Wortham Municipal Golf Course is as noted above , run by our City's Park's Department . It was chosen as Houston's first 18 ( and the second 18 in Texas ) in 1908 because of the elevation changes which are rare in this flat as a pancake area . What a layout too . I have played 97 Houston area courses ( that is about half of them ) and few can compete in that regard .
Do you guys know who Bobby Jones was ?
He was the beloved US amateur Golfer who won the Grand Slam including the British Open years ago , before BUILDING Augusta ( home of The Masters ) . He played our Golf Course , as did Harry Vardon . The University of Houston also golfed there using it as a home course since it is only a mile away . They had THE Nationally dominant Collegiate Golf team for decades , producing golfers like Freddy Couples , Homero Blancas , Bobby Watkins , Fuzzy Zoeller , Jacky Cupit , Dave Marr , Bruce Lietzke , Marty Fleckman , Nick Faldo , Keith Fergus and literally ALMOST 100 OTHER PROS . This is where they learned Golf . It is also , provably , where the Golf Cart was born on the advice of a Houston Cardiologist . Disputed claims have also been made about the first Sand Wedge coming from the nearby ( Howard ) Hughes Tool Company . He played there too when it was known as the Executive Club , predecessor to the Houston Country Club .
I bet all of the above would object to turning this Golf course into a Botanical Garden . I sat w Doug Sanders at one previous preservation meeting , along w his friend and mine beloved local Attorney Richard ' Racehorse ' Haynes . Both solidly support this Course , and oppose its conversion , as do I . We need their help again FOTS and the PGA's . We need your help too .
There is a petition that I am asking all of you to sign . It is here .
The magnificent 7th hole at Gus Wortham is where I scored an unbelievable two on a 400 yard uphill ( and over water ) , par 4 . Every Golfer who ever played there would remember that beautiful Signature hole , and envy my scorecard . Future Golfers should have the opportunity to try and equal that miracle . If that hole is replaced w a ' Fragrance Garden ' , and a spot for ' Pottery Classes ' , none will have that opportunity . A united Fotisserie can help stop this rape .Please sign the petition FOTS ,and help PDUS preserve Houston history .
Oh , one more thing . The course sits across from a huge cemetery , ( 125k are buried there ) . I found a nice spot and left Mom's ashes there . Not long after that I buried Waldo's Dog tags there too . My brother added ashes from his son , and later from a beloved pet as well . That spot I picked is 50 feet from my eventual Golf miracle . The place is more than special to me . It is magic .
