Numero uno on our list , the first car I owned , was a Triumph Herald . Opening the hood also lifted both front fenders and did so backwards , w the headlights pointing at the concrete . $300 .
Number duo was a Black 1960 Mercedes 220SB , $600 . Mahogany dash , 4 speed manual ( on the column ) , pleated and rolled red leather . Named , ( after that Beatles song ) , Sexy Cedie . This was maybe 1969 so you see even then the punishment was rising within me . This car was remarkably slow , once losing a stop light drag race to a VW Bug running on 3 cylinders . None of my cars BTW were as pretty as these , but I tried to stick w the original colors .
Tres , a 1970 Renault R-10 . ( The aarrgh 10 ) . It required a plug , as the electrical system would not recharge for any reason . Purchased new for $2001 . Comfortable , quick , great mileage it actually came w a Model T style hand crank to start the motor which required super human strength . ( Luckily ....) . Rear engined , the front hood also opened backwards .
Quatro was the GF's Opel GT . ( She became an ex after 6 years ) .
That one got traded in so I drove this one , an MGB ( Waldo used to slide around in the back ) since she preferred my red car which waits in the wings....
.....and is in fact next up on our list . A 1967 912 COUPE
Number six was a 2 liter mid engine 914 w five inches of ground clearance . I have never been in a better car in the corners . If the sign said 35 for the curve you could double it , ( as proven many times ) . I used to drive like a maniac . All of these cars were 4 or 5 speed manual and the car above could do a killer ' Bootlegger Turn ' w its rear engine weight doing most of the work pulling you 180 degrees around .
As pretty as all these cars were everyone of them was mechanically a piece of shit and unending nightmare of expense and inconvenience .
So what do I drive now that I have matured a little ?
The Puntiac of course .
Other than that ,sedans . Hondas , and Acuras mostly . Had one Maxima I liked and currently I drive an old Lexus ( Toyota ) . Of all the car brands mentioned above PDUS only recommends the ones in the last paragraph . Those other ones are only supposed to work for your sex life . Real life requires dependability , and lower maintenance costs .
