Most of you will never see Ball Lightning . Waldo saw some , and he pointed it out to me . I dunno what reminded me of this day from about 1977 , but it inspired a search yielding this quote from Parascientifica "cBall lightning may be an atmospheric electrical phenomenon, the physical nature of which is still controversial. The term refers to reports of luminous, usually spherical objects which vary from pea-sized to several meters in diameter. It is sometimes associated with thunderstorms, but unlike lightning flashes, which last only a fraction of a second, ball lightning reportedly lasts many seconds. "
This stuff is so odd , that I have been reluctant to report my encounter w it . Over the years I guessed it was a bubble of Natural Gas , whose ions got exited when passing near a power line , making it glow . This was not quick as a flash of lightning either . The thing was slow enough to be a dirigible and it remained visible about 5 seconds . At that point it simply vanished , with no noise or flash , just its absence . I would never have known it was there if Waldo had not pointed it out . I remember thinking WTF when I saw it and I bet Wally did too .
Here is the report . I am watching TV on a cloudy afternoon w the dog when I hear a slight whimper and find him pointing out the window at something strange between my house and the neighbor's . I remember a sound of static , and a smell of something charred . What I saw was roughly Basketball sized , and glowing . This was not bright like the sun , but yellowish . It moved w an indecisive zig zag , like a lost balloon at the Zoo and then it vanished , as mysteriously as it arrived . This was a once in a lifetime sighting of a very rare natural occurrence . I wonder if there is some odd connection to the ' Northern Lights ' which are also charged ions ( I think ) . More likley it is some strange manifestation of swamp gas , or digestive .
I have some bad news FOTS , about tubby tabby Tiny . He faces Cancer surgery , and may lose a front leg .That will diminish his daily ' exercise ' of walking to the dinner dish . Robin Williams had a gag years ago asking ' if three legged dogs fell down on the fourth step ' . I cannot imagine Tiny even attempting another step if he loses that leg .That Wm's gag BTW was based on , I think , a line in a Leon Russell song ' Stray Dogs that live on the Highway walk on three legs ' . I do not think a three legged Tiny will walk at all but may be fitted w some sort of skateboard like Eddie Murphy used in Trading Places . On the bright side he will look cool like a Sidewalk Surfing Kitty .
For his last meal prior to the surgery Tiny has requested one of the Entrees below , Deep Fried .
Two strokes under par in Golf is called an Eagle , and it is twice as admired as an ordinary Birdie . The easiest Golf Course in Houston is in Herman Park . ( Donated by Herman Brown of Brown and Root , a city father ) . Being short at 5000 yards lots of Birdies can be had at that course of course , w a few Eagles seen as well .
Guess who took note .
Who would be a big fan of Eagles ?
Why the biggest Birds in this area ,. They are very rare .here . I have only seen two in town .

These guys did show at my Golf Course and I have seen maybe the same one , twice , three years apart . Every time I see him I swell up w Patriotism w a chest like Daisey May's . I have heard there is an Eagle that appears at Football Games who does flyovers . I would like to see that .
Those two golf courses are 10 miles apart so what other explanation could there be for these Eagles to frequent Golf Courses than they would want to see Eagles ? Who could blame them for being Eagle fans ? Unfortunately someone has misinformed them . Those following me around a course won't see many Eagles at all . Just errors . If you are lucky there will be a Comedy of them . And a bit of comity too .

Tiny , lives at the Vet , FOTS . I bet a shot stops this Purrsian Cutey , even if Dinner is all he needs to keep purring . Pity .
ReplyDeleteI love lightning.
ReplyDeleteAnd eagles.
And even fat cats.
Thanks, Preptile.
(And thanks for the golf lingo lesson!)
I was glad to get that last post off the front page aero , and this being Sunday and all ...
ReplyDeleteThat usually means lighter fare here and something w legs to start off the week .
BRB
I used to have a darkroom set up in a spare bathroom where I could tinker w variables to improve a print . On a whim I decided to first photograph , and then enlarge a Lightning Bolt in a close -up . It was harder than it sounds .
ReplyDeleteHad to be super fast film of course , tricked up in the chemical bath . Also had to leave the shutter open fo a long period , which meant a tripod , and the Camera had to be under a garbage bag to keep it dry .
I never got a close up , and I tried .
Still got the negatives buried somewhere .
The 8 by 10s did not impress .
Anyway aero , I always liked lightning too , but for me the big fun is Thunder .
Kaboom .
Did anyone else see the Simpsons tonight?
ReplyDeleteWe taped it and I just saw it a while ago.
There was a guy in the episode on Porpoise.
They did it on Popoise too .
Hello FOTS . We saw Toots on the Chronicle pages yesterday . She was defending Prep .
ReplyDeleteGood . Somebody needed to do that .
I just heard something on Rush and I am livid.
He says next year smokers pay $5100 per year in ADDITIONAL premiums.
I know lots of liberal smokers about to be very pissed off . They have just been fined $100 a week . That is like adding $10 to the already ludicrous price of every pack.
Prep says he forgot my Camels so I have to go pay $5 for a pack now, soon to be 15.This will not go unoticed by the American Smoker, (who will be rolling his own , and switching to a pipe). It will make the mid terms more interesting too.
