When I first signed on I got 3 Months of HBO for free , a trial version . Mostly they were showing the Back to the Future Movies then , and the Chevey Chase ' Vacation ' movies which I had seen in the Theater in the 80's . I declined to invest , but I did record 146 Movies on the alternate Channels like Max and TMC . I mentioned Mean Streets last week . It was part of that pile which I have now wittled down to 20 movies , in anticipation of cutting my cable . I had to get ruthless , deleting most w subtitles , and those believed to be insufferable . Most of these movies I had heard of , but never seen . Some proved otherwise , as familiar and yet forgettable at the same time . I missed Alice Doesn't Live here anymore and was horrified to discover late that it was related to that Horrible Sitcom w Flo in Mel's Diner . I had to finish it too . Those are my rules w Books and Movies . Unless , unnspeakable , I will ride them out and let the author have his say . I shouldn't have .
Sometimes I get lucky w a missed Harrison Ford movie , others I remember seeing before in bits on TBS or USA , and I can safely delete them . Others like Taking Chance surprise w unexpected quality featuring Kevin Bacon in a very Patriotic role . The movie was about escorting a uh , Marine Corpse to burial and was as Patriotic as any Movie since Moscow on the Hudson .
Who knew that Damon , Dicaprio and Norton had made so many 3 hour movies tho . With 146 movies to go thru mine was an emarrassment of riches and it has been an interesting ride sorting through them all . The ability to fast forward thru commercials will be missed , as will all the Movies themselves . Apparantly I had skipped a LOT of first run movies over the last 20 years . Most were better than expected , w some thrillers fraught w tension , sexual and otherwise . I am currently slogging thru considerable Pre - tension in the stunningly bad ' Tree of Life ' . Brad Pitt movies do not as a rule inspire , as they tend to the insipid . Easily the first hour of this movie could have been cut . It has quite a few moments of extended silence , w the characters contemplating some Hallmark drivel parading as ' Deep ' . There was maybe 20 minutes of astronomy footage w no kidding , the same eerie creepy chanting from 2001 as the Monkeys met the Monolith . I bet you remember how entertaining that part of the movie was . It is listed at you Tube as WTF. Same deal here . Not very entertaining at all . Problem is , I am stuck even tho it sucks . I have to give the author his say .
Avoid this movie at all costs FOTS , as it is indeed , one of the most boring and pretentious ever made . It hopes to be a Nature Movie , and contemplative ' Art ' interweaing evolution , platitude , and grieving widows . married to stern Pittyables . I woulda preferred Platypusses or Pussae anything to add a little excitment . Even the return of the Monolith could not save this extended viewing Power Pointe Presentation (P's!) of all your favorite Gregorian Chants accompanied by random superflous footage .
I may have to reconsider and reccommend this as so bad , that it must be seen . If I do so , take a cold shower and decide against renting it . You would only hate me for it even if I did it on Porpoise .

I keep searching for something to kick off the conversation, something uh,Porpoiseful. Not like Prep's Special purpose tho.I saw that movie and there was nothing special about it.
ReplyDeleteI came over during my lunch break to gives thanks to everyone for such a kind reception after my long absence, only to find that new postage had been put up without the usual notice. I decided to post my comment and THEN read Preptile's new entry. My words wait for no one.
ReplyDeleteThere will always be something new here to read FOTS , if I am doing my job . At least 10 essays a month is the plan , w the comments filling in the days between .
ReplyDeleteWe are having a busy day today , and you will never guess where today's readers sit .
The USA . The Greatest Country on Earth .
Of course , they are our normal leading readers by a ten to one ratio . Today they outnumber our Foreigners by 25 to one , a first . Welcome Fellow Citizens .
Please check in with us before voting for the next President . Most of you seem to have missed our recommendations last NO-Vember .
You know FOTS , since the topic is Movies I should mention I am in the middle of one that I think is gonna be outstanding . Love the start w Will Smith trying to raise a son .
ReplyDeleteLuckily it is recorded , because I won't see it finished until later .
The Pursuit of Happyness .
Sharia thinks he is handsome .
Will Smith is no Valentino.
ReplyDeleteSharia, you would love Valentino in THE SHEIK.
ReplyDeleteOh , I did . I still like this movie tho , that Prep and I are watching . I almost cried when he. bought his kid a Clark Bar from his meager earnings . It's been building too , w tragedy after tragedy for the family . Now there are only a few minutes left for a happy ending . He tries hard too , to do right for his boy . This theme is Patriotic like that Kevin Bacon Movie about the Marine Corpse , and I like it .
ReplyDeleteI just saw something in the Movie that rang a bell from my past , and put a smile on my face . Smith turned in a Test before anyone else . I had forgotten , but I always did that too and wondered why it took everyone so long . My grades were shit too , but I was willing to shoot from the hip and get those tests over with ASAP . It wasn't just tests either . I gravitated towrds Blitz Chess , where 10 years ago I played 3500 games, almost all on a 5 Minute Clock . ( Winning , ahem 80%). There must be a way to make that speed pay , but I have not found it yet .
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been to the movies in a while but it is odd that he laughs 1 second before the Theater . He should get a job making laugh tracks for sit-coms.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure this bodes well for a marriage.
Prep had something at the chron yesterday that you missed. His comment was on Presidential word coinage, like TR's 'Mollycoddle'.
ReplyDeleteIt is self explanatory.
"What would FDR have thought of Barack Obama's new word: "snowmageddon" ? He would call it a derivative theft from whoever named Carmeggadon last year in California , but mo Metafivical . "
BRB
I had to ask what he meant w that "mo Metafivical" crack. His answer?
ReplyDelete" Well beyond Metaphor ".
Makes sense to me.
Did you guys see this ?
ReplyDeleteWe suspect another love triangle here , and vengeance from a jealous pet .
